Settlers Bring Live Stock and Reporter Drama to Pearl City

Manuel Vasconcellos, 17, is arrested by Detective Chan Poon for alleged second degree larceny after a chicken haul found near Emma Hall. Poon pursued, claims of gunfire and a head injury amid a long chase. The S.N. Castle arrives with settlers led by A. W. Kellogg, bringing cows, horses, poultry, and 20,000 orange plants. The party includes L. G. Kellogg and several Cal or Los Angeles residents, planning to cultivate navel oranges and other produce at Pearl City. The voyage followed a thirteen day trip from San Francisco.

Raid at King Street Bares Chinaman Suspects

Deputy U S marshal Chillingworth raided Chu Kuns place on King Street last night. Two Chinese men were detained and one recent arrival from China was identified. An opium outfit and tools were seized. One suspect attempted to bite the marshal with a lead hand tool but failed.

In Police Court tomorrow the Ladies of Kamehameha School will testify as to the good character of Ab Young, one of the defendants, who was employed there before the Okinaman left for China. The case involves the importation of opium into the country and the two defendants face trial.

Waialua sugar plantation proposed by Dillingham firm

Promoter B F Dillingham and Castle Cooke agents plan a new Waialua plantation with 3.5 million capital and 1.5 million paid up stock. Lands exceed 10 000 acres from Waimea to Kaena Point, with future expansion to 26 000 20 000 acres. Soil tests by Prof Maxwell favor sugar, five of six samples strong for fertility, aided by lime and phosphate fertilization. Major landholdings include Kawailoa Mokuleia and Halstead properties with artesian wells and a new 6,000,000 gallon daily plant, 700 acres planting, and staff housing for 300 workers. Stock list opens, with some buyers paying premium.
