Old Glory Waves as Hawaii Joins United States
On August 12 1898 Hawaii formally cedes sovereignty to the United States at noon. A grand ceremony at the Executive Building includes flag lowering of the Hawaiian standard and raising the Stars and Stripes amid military bands, guards, and dignitaries led by President Dole and Admiral Miller. Police, guards, and naval detachments orchestrate the event with cheers and prayers.
