South Dakota Volunteers Arrive With 670 Men in Rio de Janeiro

The U S Transport City of Rio de Janeiro docked at the Oceanic wharf at six o clock Sunday morning after a three day voyage from San Francisco. It carried 670 men of the First Regiment South Dakota Volunteers and detachments for Utah Batteries in Manila, with 105 and 55 men respectively. The Rio’s arrival featured a South Dakota band playing on the pier and gifts of fruit tossed by onlookers. The unit, commanded by Colonel Alonzo Droat, includes officers Major George F Shields and Captain A W Kimball among others, with detailed rosters for Companies A through M and unattached officers. First Battalion remains in San Francisco for future transport.
