Vagaries of Primary Election Law in Nevada County

The amended Primary election law produced unsatisfactory results for voters with only four contests in the county. The Democratic district attorney contest drew bitter clashes and even influenced Republican ballots. Questions arise over the law’s intent as opposite-party voters affected nominations and cost to taxpayers. The Ely precinct saw heavy cross-party involvement, while the Socialists voted minimally. The piece notes similar crossovers in other counties and critiques the law as imperfect. It also covers the State Bank and Trust Company scandal, calling for public investigation into receivership mismanagement and reporting on Mr. Wildes’ dividends and fees amid ongoing concerns.

The system reverses the usual film mechanism, using rigid glass plates and a moving lens to produce 576 images per plate. Plate cost is four cents versus $1.50 for equivalent film, and Bettini’s method can display a nine minute sequence without gaps, resembling the phonograph bringing music into homes.
