Parcels Post System Readiness Announced

Postmaster General Hitchcock announced the parcels post system would begin general operation January 1, 1918, expanding rural delivery and star routes over more than 1,000,000 miles and replacing private express parcel transport. Senator Bourne provided a circular summary of chief features, noting articles up to 11 pounds and 72 inches are mailable, with possible indemnity and delivery charges, and ICC review for rate changes.

Meat Prices on the Edge as San Francisco Butchers Warn

Retail butchers in San Francisco warn they face bankruptcy as patrons cannot pay higher prices. The Retail Butchers Association led by A. Shapiro says butchers are squeezed between wholesale pressure and consumer limits, with many members nearly out of business. The group plans a tariff reduction campaign as the only remedy. Restaurant owners are told wholesale price increases will raise costs on September 1 by two cents per pound for choice cuts.

Chance For Nevada Boys At West Point

The War Department asks Senator Newlands to name a principal and two alternates for West Point with Professor Lewers of the State University at Reno to conduct a competitive exam on November 18 for all eligible Nevada youths. The top candidate becomes principal, the next two alternates. A separate exam for Annapolis principal and three alternates will select entrants for April 1913. Eligibility lasts from 17 to 22 years old. Minimum height 4 feet 11 inches at 17 or 5 feet 5 inches at 18 or older.

The President and the Interior Secretary order sale of about 1.5 million acres of Shoshone Uteah and Crow lands at public auction led by James W. Witten. Minimum bids 60 cents to $1.50 per acre.
