Draft Men Must Register Thursday Sept 12

Washington Aug 31 President Wilson set Thursday September 12 as the date for registration for the army draft of men 18 to 45 not yet registered or not in service. Estimates say over 12 million may be subject to call with emphasis on those in good health and without dependents. Young men aged eighteen to be grouped for education and not called until other classes exhausted. Those already in service and certain officers and enlisted men are exempt but must register when leaving service. A fatal powder explosion at Ruth killed miner D V Morgan. coroner cites his carelessness.

Teacher problem confronts state schools revival in Carson

Carson City August 29 educators from across the state discuss the difficulty of retaining competent male teachers and principals in public schools. Larger schools fear losing leaders to military instruction and service opportunities while the conference backs Americanization plans with patriotism courses and citizen training for youths and adults. Governor Boyle to appoint committees as the state council of defense becomes a subcommittee for the effort.
