Five draft groups outlined for all registrants were publicized after a New York dinner leak. Class one covers single men without dependents, while classes two through five list varying dependents and roles including police and fire personnel, government workers, and aliens.
The Food Administration predicts 452,000,000 bushels of potatoes, up 100,000,000 from last year, to aid farmers and the public. L. D. Sweet says hotels and restaurants should favor potatoes to curb meatless and wheatless days. Officials aim to accelerate meat and wheat shipments to Entente allies through this surplus.
New York Oct 16 The Mechanics National Bank of New York estimates world war costs at 160 million dollars per day six and a half million per hour with the United States contributing at least a quarter. It notes world spending rising from 50 million daily at outbreak to 100 million a year ago and projects 155 billion total by next August.
Sheriff Joe Harris of Elko County arrived with B. E. Kuhl, condemned for the murder of Jarbidge stage driver Fred Searcey, taken to the death cell. Kuhl chose shooting as the method. execution set for January 10. Ed Beck was sentenced to life. McGraw was released on DA motion.
Joe Simmons, a Reno chain gang prisoner, was shot and killed by Officer Hans Larsen during an escape attempt. Larsen reports Simmons advanced with a rock and refused orders, with self defense stated. Patrolman Lee Walstrom later arrested Simmons for begging, and Police Judge Bryson fined him $20 and sentenced him to ten days on the chain gang.
Internal Revenue officers report evasion of the 12 1 2 percent special tax by munitions manufacturers totaling about 17 5 million dollars, with over 10 million recovered. Voluntary tax paid last year was about 26 3 million. Field checks show many returns far below amounts due, often taking large depreciation charges or deducting entire plant values, with claims the plants would be useless after the war.
The Nevada State Prison farm sold its 20 ton 1917 wheat crop to Riverside Milling Company of Reno for 3.15 dollars per hundred weight or 1.89 dollars per bushel, reserving seed for next year. Oats and barley yielded beyond needs and are held for higher prices.
Last Tuesday afternoon a fire at the ranch of Mrs. John Vance six miles from McDermitt Humboldt County total loss of a residence a small house and multiple outbuildings. Authorities suspect children playing with matches in the kitchen started the blaze.
