Ernest Paris brought the incident to Elko, as association signs promising a $900 reward for killing or stealing cattle were posted across the region. A London dispatch reports the steamship Volturno burned in mid Atlantic with at least 136 dead and 521 rescued. Rescue ships led by the Carmania reached the scene as storms hindered lifeboat use and two boats were lost.
