Congress Ends Exemption for Mining Claims This Year

A circulated report claimed no assessment work would be required on unpatented mining claims this year or that decisions would come in December. Congress already ruled before adjournment that no further exemption is authorized by law, leaving no authority to grant exemptions.

Miner John McCarthy Dies After Self Inflicted Wounds at Tonopah

Nov 2 reports that miner John McCarthy, brother of J J McCarthy former White Caps mine superintendent, died at a hospital after a late night assault on himself at the McKane shaft. He had been drinking and believed enemies pursued him, fleeing along a railroad track before found with injuries deemed self inflicted. Italian immigrants arriving in the United States notes 4000 leaving Naples in a single day.

Baby Hill School Honor Roll

October honor roll lists pupils with perfect attendance. Fifth grade students Molly Hutchison and Telfer Kitchen are named along with second grade Violet Jury, Anna Loofbarrow, Histe Loofbarrow and Adelaide Jeffries. Teacher listed.

Birth Announcements From Nevada Sets

A series of birth notices from Nevada record births in Bureka and Reno. One entry notes a son born November 1, 1920 to the wife of Ralph Ferguson formerly Marion Damele in Bureka. Episcopal Sunday School Benefit Receipts Eureka

The Eureka Episcopal Sunday School committee publishes receipts of the benefit event. Recorded are 69.60 from ticket sales and 9820 from lemonade peanuts and cakes plus 150.50 from land stand sales totaling 9806.20. Armistice Day Ball to Benefit Eureka Le gion Post

Armistice Day Ball announced by Woreka Post No 20 American Legion to raise funds for renting a room and equipping it for members. Ex soldiers deserve a gathering place and Eureka County residents are urged to attend the benefit on Friday evening November 12. Japanese wives of the middle and lower classes frequently blacken their teeth to please a jealous husband.

Pioneer of Old Eureka Mary Bryant Dies in Reno At 73

Mrs. Mary Bryant aged 73 died at her Reno home after a short illness. ANevadan resident for about 45 years she came from England with her husband. She opened a Eureka store and later moved to Reno. Survived by daughters Mrs E T Sowden and Mrs George Luke and several grandchildren.

Federal Reserve warns on Fourth Liberty Loan bond exchanges

The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco warns Twelfth District holders not to exchange Fourth Liberty Loan temporary coupon bonds before February 1. Permanent Fourth bonds are unavailable due to printing delays, while only First Second and Third Liberty bonds are accepted for exchange. The Eureka Cash Store notes a carload of Safety Nitro Powder in 1/2 and 1 inch sticks available for orders.

Eureka District School Honors Roll For October

The district raises standards for Honor Roll requiring perfect attendance and at least 90 percent in every grade. Attendance improved last month with a 36 percent drop in absences. Democratic Rally Concludes Eureka Campaign

The Eureka Theatre venue hosted a Democratic closing campaign meeting last Saturday evening. Chair H A Swick led a gathering of men and women with several Democratic figures on stage, including two Indies and Dr W H Brennen who spoke on the campaign issues and presented figures to support his views. A social dance followed the remarks, ending a pleasant rally.

High School Honor Roll Sees New Names In October

High school notes list three new students Albert Biale Nola Reynolds and Thomas Pastorino on the October honor roll though they make up about 40 percent of enrollment yet nearly none of the honors. The issue notes attendance records show a 3 percent drop from last month but remain better than three-year totals. A Sophomore class recital and piano solos are reported, plus a school election in the assembly room. Plans mention improving the high school appearance and introducing athletics to meet state physical training requirements with basketball and calisthenics likely, in cooperation with Rescue Hose Co.
