Harpooned Whale Prompts Beef Substitutes Plan

West Coast Whaling Company, formed by San Francisco shipping men, plans a Trinidad harbor whaling station costing 500000 to harvest whale meat for human and animal use. Proposals include curing meat for the public, selling inferior product to poultry ranches, and extracting deodorized whale oil as lard substitute. Chicago Packing Industry Reaches Vast Scale in 1912

High Cost of Fat on Beef in Cattle Industry

Henry J Waters president of Kanes Agricultural College told cattlemen in Manhattan that farmers pay about 25 cents per pound to fatten cattle while fat sells for only about one third that amount. Mircovich Executed by Shooting in Nevada Prison

On May 14 at the Nevada State Prison in Carson Mircovich was executed by three rifles in a wall mounted machine, the first shooting execution in two years. He died instantly at 11 15 after refusing a head covering. Twenty five witnesses attended as the guard trio fired the loaded rifles. one gun held a blank. The board of pardons took no action. Mircovich had stabbed John Gregovich in Tonopah after demanding money from an estate administrator. The Supreme Court denied a motion for a new trial.
