Plan to remonetize silver eyed by Nevada speaker
Speaker J B Giffen proposes a practical remonetization of silver in the United States. He suggests a $1 an ounce duty on imported silver, a coinage basis of 20.67 to one, and silver certificates in denominations of $1 and up. The plan envisions silver as money, storage in vaults, and silver becoming legal tender. It would spur Western mines and create broad employment, with estimated $10 per capita impact once production reaches one billion dollars in ten years.
