R M Catlin plans a 20 ton experimental plant south of Elko to test shale oil potential. He enlisted shale expert R H Findlater who reported a 40 mile shale extent and possible large scale operations. Catlin aims to prove commercial value before a big plant investment.
Construction crews on the Southern Pacific have dug a shaft through 75 feet of snow to access a snow shed near the summit. Workers report drifts of similar depth along the line, indicating widespread snow cover and ongoing maintenance challenges.
Jessa Mendes and Thomas F. McGeary announce a business partnership in Ely with plans to expand merchandising in Duckwater. Mendes recently bought a California home and will spend part of the year there while managing operations locally.
A portion of his time will be devoted to public service as Mr. McGeary is praised as a capable businessman who will prove a valuable citizen to the Duckwater country.
Nye County commissioners grant permission to Jefferson to carry a rifle to deal with rabid dogs though none exist locally. Neighbors complain as Jefferson trains on house pets. Also university officials seek county cooperation on funding an agricultural agent under Smith Leaver fund with $500 per county. Stillwater area sheep numbered about 4000 report rabies outbreak. over 100 have died in days. A coyote caused bites, and seven sheep were killed in a single day amid hydrophobia signs. Fallon Standard reports.
The Jarbidge mining district north of Wells Nevada asks Western Pacific for 30 miners to support expanded operations. The stage line will pay miners' fares to the camp for those hired by operating companies.
Ella Connell wife of rancher Mike Connell in Elko Nevada received an indeterminate sentence of ten years to life after confessing to trying to murder her husband with Croton oil. She showed composure in court, and her alleged paramour Joe Bishop faces a $10,000 bail after arrest.
The second installment of taxes for 1915 is due at the County Treasurer's office in the Court House, Eureka Nevada, on Monday May 1 1916. If unpaid by Monday June 5 1916, delinquency costs will be added.
