Austin inventor W Brogram patents a safe cap to prevent misfiring in blasting. The oblong cap accepts a fuse loop with a vent at the apex, directing fire into the cap to prevent failure to explode. A grease layer between explosive and vent aids underwater shots, preserving caps and speeding work.
Secretary McAdoo announced that all government depositories will pay 2 percent interest per year on deposits starting June 1. He ordered an extra 10 million dollars added to national bank deposits, lifting total federal funds to over 52.6 million and boosting annual earnings to about 1.058 million until the new rate takes effect.
L Deady reports Washington approval of Nevada withdrawal applications for Carey Act reclamation. One year withdrawals total 19752 acres in Churchill County to Haskell Kenney Williams of Falcon, 5120 acres to Quinn Tetranic and Kane at Miller s Nevada, 29230 acres to Nevada Irrigation Land and Development Co at Geyser Lincoln County. Including these, the government has withdrawn 106127 acres since February 1 for reclamation and settlement under the Onrey Act.
The Railroad Valley Company accelerates land settlement prep in Duckwater Valley under the Carey act. They sunk the first well in a 15 000 acre tract 68 miles from Ely, using an Am can rotary drill with hydraulic jet. expect 20 feet per hour and artesian wells. By June 1, first settlers may be received. the venture evolved from potash prospecting to mapping lake-bed formation with shallow 100 to 200 foot wells after 1200 foot churn drill.
Johan Adolph Anderson, a well known valley resident, died last Friday after an illness of several weeks. He had earlier slipped a knife while skinning a cow carcass, cut the back of his hand, and paid no heed to the wound. A physician later diagnosed anthrax contracted from the cut, and despite treatment, he could not be saved.
An engineer’s attempt to lower stags on one shaft side to the 60-foot level by brake, against rules, caused the Leonard mine disaster at Batté Montara last week. Five men died as both cages descended to the bulkhead 2200 feet deep, from the 1400 and 60 foot levels.
The legislature enacted broad school law changes. It expands the State Board of Education duties to include business forms and industrial work in lower grades and adds fall commercial and industrial courses to high school curricula. It requires trustees to purchase and loan text and supplementary books from district land, with guardians liable for damages. Manual training and domestic science may be funded similarly. Budgeting must account for book provision costs. New census rules set conditions for rural teaching duties, with city districts continuing existing structures. The certificate system adds business, civics, and current events to elementary requirements and allows credits from summer schools. County commissioners may transfer funds to districts with at least 25 cents tax, aiding high school work, under constraints. The superintendent may move funds for relocated students. A State investment board may purchase securities with limitations. Counties Elko, Humboldt, and White Pine may bond for high schools without new acts. A proposed constitutional amendment could permit the permanent school fund to loan at six percent on first mortgage farm loans.
A San Francisco driven plan announces a whaling company to supply whale steaks for households. A $500000 whaling station will be built at Trinidad Harbor, Humboldt County, to render blubber into fertilizer and render meat products for public sale while whale oil may be marketed as a lard substitute.
