Blockade of the Eureka & Palisade Railway 1890
Narrative from 1890 shows the Eureka and Palisade line collapsed by heavy winter snow and ice. Conductor Crowley’s crew of about 60 men fought two weeks of perilous clearing from Eureka to Palisade, with engines and snow plows wrecked and supplies running low. After 15 days the track was cleared and mail trains resumed, though the ordeal included frostbite, near-starvation rations, and heroic efforts to resupply and reopen the line.
