Elko June 7 Mrs Ella Connell confessed attempted poisoning of her husband Mike Connell in a preliminary hearing. She implicated Constable H A McMurtrey and said they planned to marry or gain his money. She testified of a will and a large stake, while Taber faces grand jury scrutiny. A Basque herder reports a deadly coyote attack near Buckhorn. A Virginia City hill climb auto incident ends with a brake failure and a near ditch plunge.

Elko editor cited in contempt in Connell poisoning case

Justice Clark cited George B. Russell editor of the Elko Independent in court for contempt over a newspaper account of J. M. Taber's preliminary hearing. Russell’s sentence was suspended and the fine remitted. McMurtrey case moved to district court with witnesses and possible tests to come within ten days. Also reported Elko wool clip sale at 29 cents per pound for 6000 pounds.

Government Surveyor Hoff man Dies by Suicide in Elko

W E Hoffman a Government surveyor ended his life in Elko by cutting his throat with a razor on Monday. Despondency and poor health are given as factors. Hoffman, about 35, was to lead a surveying party and was well known in the region. He leaves a wife in Sigourney Iowa. Remains were shipped to Sigourney.

Howe for Senate Announces Candidacy and Nevada Ties

Albert H. Howe, born 1872 in Brooklyn, is formally seeking the Republican nomination for United States Senate. A longtime business executive in Nevada, he served as private secretary to Senator Platt and later to Senator Nixon, helped develop the foreign department of a major transportation company, and became secretary, treasurer, and director of Goldfield Consolidated Mines Company. He and his family reside in Goldfield.
