The San Francisco Bulletin reports a ring of bankers colluding with E. J. Smith, the defaulting tax collector sentenced to ten years in Folsom State Prison. Scassarta Smith pleaded guilty, influenced by bankers, to shield banks from financial collapse. Missouri Supreme Court rules policy revocation after three payments

The Missouri Supreme Court held fraternal and assessment life insurers may revoke a policy after three serial payments. A May 1896 policy lapsed when the June 1899 payment was missed and the insured died in January 1900. The company denied the claim, but a lower court found positive policy value and sided with the beneficiary.

Southern Nevada Transportation Firm Planned For Tonopah Route

A new company named Southern Nevada Fortpeceine Company to operate between Tonopah and southern camps has been formed. G M Harris, recently resigning Southern Pacific travel agent, named general manager. Arrangements with Tonopah and Garson Colorado Railroad set to enable merchandise traffic shifts, with traction engines and soon many teams in service. O Whittemore of auto freight line says feeders to Clark road will service Tonopah via Bull Frog and Goldfield, including high speed perishable cargo autos. Clark railway backs project with substantial investment to link Southern Nevada camps.

Hazen Cut Off Work Halted by Court Injunction

Jerome Higman of Hazen Nevada secured an injunction from Judge Carter in Reno District Court barring Southern Pacific from building a railroad through his Hazen land. Higman, an early Hazen homesteader, had refused offers and insisted his property be valued higher, prompting the halt while the dispute proceeds in court.

Diphtheria in Tonopah becomes deadly outbreak

Tonopah Sun reports at least three diphtheria deaths in Tonopah over the past three or four days, including an adult. No quarantine on patient homes, but funerals restricted to Health Officer Smith and Father Baler. Five more cases claimed. doctors allegedly failed to report to authorities.

Taft Talks on Canal Policy at Cincinnati Banquet

Secretary of War Taft spoke on policy and practice at the Commercial Club banquet in Cincinnati. He argued that Panama Canal materials should be bought American when prices and quality match, noting the need for a clear rule from Congress and that, lacking one, American goods and thrift guide construction.

State University Faculty Discusses Normal School

Orvis King, Superintendent of Public Instruction, attended the faculty meeting at their request. The State Normal School drew much discussion with improvement suggestions. Declining department attendance was explained and causes noted. It was shown better trained teachers are scarce, and compensation is too low for country schools. The Board of Education issues temporary certificates to fill gaps.

The Rand gold output in South Africa increases month by month with March producing 885,575 ounces. At current rates the annual value exceeds 90 million dollars, nearing the hundred million dollar milestone as deep level mining expands.

Western Sheep Quarantined Across Western States

The Department of Agriculture announces another quarantine on Western sheep. Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, North Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and Idaho are affected. Moving sheep out of these states requires a Government Inspector declaration of freedom from scale. penalties apply. The order takes effect June 1, 1905.

An Ogden dispatch notes James H Neven, Nevada state license and bullion tax agent, surveying Lincoln County and Tonopah district via Las Vegas. He examined Pioche, De Lamar and Searchlight areas, met Quartette mine managers, and promised a report to Governor Sparks. He cites rapid settlement south of Las Vegas and imminent sensational mines along the Grand canyon.

Dry irrigation trial eyed by Nevada Experiment Station

Nevada University at Reno may study dry irrigation to grow wheat barley alfalfa on desert lands. The simple method uses Fall and Winter moisture from snow and rain to seed crops in spring, yielding lower tonnage but higher quality, especially hard wheat. Tonopah Goldfield ore shipments for the week ending May 36 totaled 1763 tons, all from Tonopah mines.
