In St. Louis on July 9 Judge Alton B. Parker was nominated for President by the Democratic National Convention after a long night of speeches and a single roll call. The roll showed Parker with 658 votes, with Hearst 200 and Cockrell 42, as Missouri Governor Dockery moved to unanimous support. Bryan addressed the hall, urging unity, and Parker’s telegram urging a gold standard debate was read, provoking a storm before final adjournment.
Alton Brooks Parker born in Cortland New York in 1852 pursued public schooling Cortland Academy and Albany Law School. He taught while studying law and began public service as Ulster County surrogate. He led the campaign that propelled David B. into prominence.
Hill, governor of New York, declined the lieutenant governor nom in 1888 and 1888 again, joined the judiciary in 1886 as a Supreme Court Justice, later declined the 1891 Democratic governor nomination, and became chief justice of the Court of Appeals six years after 1891. He lives at Esopus near Kingston on the Hudson with his wife and a married daughter. Henry Gassaway Davis, born November 16 1828 in Baltimore, grew up in public schools, lost his father early, worked from youth, and held many jobs before leading rail and mining ventures. He married Kate A. and rose to head the West Virginian Central & Pittsburg Railroad, later becoming its president and a leading coal operator. He also served as superintendent, brake man, conductor, and agent at Piedmont W Va of the B&O Railway.
United States Marshal Frank Emmitt of Carson City died at Lane Hospital in San Francisco after an operation for a suspected liver abscess. Nine doctors treated him. the liver was found normal but he collapsed and died. A native of Oregon, 61, formerly Washoe County sheriff, he served as U.S. Marshal and is survived by his wife and six children in Carson.
At Springfield Illinois July 5 Thomas Watson of Georgia for President and Thomas H Tibble s of Nebraska for Vice Principal were nominated by the Populist Convention. The platform calls for government issued money as full legal tender, postal savings banks, worker organization rights, wage earner reforms, initiative and referendum, prohibition on alien land ownership, withdrawal of special privileges to trusts and monopolies, and government ownership of railroads telegraphs and parcel post.
A New York bulletin says American Smelting and Refining Co engineers are planning an eight million dollar smelter and refinery on the San Francisco outskirts. The project aims for a pretentious plant larger than any in the company, driven by South ore contracts and Tonopah tonnages, with the bill to be shipped to New York by water.
