Joseph BR Ryan, one of Nevada's delegates to the convention, died in St Louis on July 1 from pneumonia. A long-time mining figure on the Comstock, he held posts including Superintendent of several mines and manager of the Comstock Pumping Association. He was 55, survived by his widow and daughter Mrs Alfred Cellieur of San Francisco. He belonged to Reno and Storey lodges and Manogue Council, noted for his courtesy and integrity.
Early Monday 9 pm gunfire echoed in Tonopah near the post office as Thomas Kendall shot at E. L. Mims after mistaking him for a prowler. Mims escaped unharmed, Kendall warned him to leave town by the first stage.
