Carson City dispatch notes strong opposition to Senator Newlands in the upcoming race. Sparks faction in the Democratic Party is said to be bitter and may organize to overwhelm his bid at the State Convention. Newlands allegedly backed Governor Sparks then helped defeat Sparks, straining ties that may not heal before the next senatorial contest.

The late General Julia Bedwell and widow Mrs. Anna E. K. Bidwell gift a 1900 acre natural park in Butte County near Chico. The land from Ohio outskirts extends eight miles east into foothills, includes Hooker Oak, and preserves timber, prohibits intoxicants sales, and bans Sunday picnics. Mrs. Bidwell retains control until death, with open council approval next week.
