Philadelphia police raided the Tenderloin district capturing over two thousand people including prominent citizens and fashion leaders. Four hundred officers toed the line as gamblers and assignation houses were searched. bail totals exceeded $100,000 while some women offered jewels as bribes and one leaped from a window to escape arrest.
Secretary Wilson's investigation into rumors of a leak in the government cotton crop bulletin is made public. Ed win Holmes, a statistician, is found guilty of manipulating figures and sharing the report with favored stock gamblers and is dismissed. The DA says prosecution is not tenable. N. Van Riper of New York allegedly used advance information to aid brokers in stock gambling. Also, an ad notes a so called Diamond Cure for consumption from Paria and a testimonial for Dr. King's New Discovery for coughs and colds at Schneider drug store.
George McNamee was arrested at Ely in White Pine County for selling whisky to Native Americans, a case detailing unlawful liquor distribution to Indians and prompting police action.
Denver dispatch June 28 reports Governor John Sparks of Nevada advocating for more Chinese labor in the West while claiming Roosevelt’s immigration stance is cautious. He rails against Bryan’s 1896 and Roosevelt’s reforms, urges a mass vote to curb the System, and proposes divesting from stocks and bonds to force a financial collapse and cheaper fares. He warns Congress hesitates, courts and juries are bought, and calls for drastic citizen action.
A massive blaze swept Goldfield last Saturday afternoon, starting from a gasoline stove explosion in Mrs. Wilson’s millinery shop. With no water pressure and strong winds, nearly all buildings within blocks burned, including the Hotel Goldfield and Grand View Hotel, totaling about $100,000 in losses and leaving little insurance.
