Monkey motion steam engine tested at Ogden shops
The Stevens valve gear known as the monkey motion underwent a trial run to Montello last week. Invented by A J Stevens, the system places all valve workings on the outside of the engine and uses a two-circle mechanism to replace eccentrics. Edgar M Luckett led the Ogden rebuilds of engine No 1010, with claims of coal savings between 26 and 40 percent and potential widespread conversion to the new motion if trials prove satisfactory.
