Rear Admiral Sperry, retired, who piloted the United States fleet around the world in 1908 09, died in naval hospital Washington DC after a few days illness from pneumonia. His renowned voyage remains a highlight of his long naval career.
Admiral Sperry, born in Brooklyn in 1847, commanded ships in the Atlantic Fleet starting May 1918 and led until their arrival in Hampton Roads in spring 1909. A noted strategist and international law authority, he retired on September 2, 1909.
Judge Blair of Adams County Ohio urges newspaper publicity as the best antidote to graft. He says a free press that prints government facts from municipal to national levels keeps politicians from running the government for themselves and defends freedom. loss of such papers would bring corruption.
