Reno writer reports Eureka Smelting and Mining Company to take over the Eureka Nevada railroad, start a 2500 ton daily smelter, and process ores from the district with ore supplies to endure for years. Torres touts favorable mining reports and proffers stock exchange terms for Eureka Croesus holders, forecasting district prosperity and enhanced railroad profits.
Last week marked the close of the third month of the regular high school term. Ten days were lost to building relocations and one more has been made up by continuing classes. The plan is to regain lost time by occasional Saturday sessions. The usual Christmas and Thanksgiving breaks will be observed as before.
The Eureka Theatre staged the three set comedy drama Hats and Watches as Thanksgiving entertainment attracting many Eureka County residents and visitors. Amateur cast included Brennen, Gibson, Aaron Moore, Skillman, Binle, Nolan Reynolds, Damele, and Aarons Moore sang Why Should I Cry Over You with Blue encore. Father Kennedy praised the crowd after the show before a social dance at Pavilion Hall lasting until 3 30 a m with a four piece orchestra.
In a Sentinel introduction an appreciative note from C. J. Travers of Farmers & Merchants National Bank highlights Eureka's industrial growth. He cites shipments of ore sheep and honey as signs of prosperity, noting Uncle Sam Consolidated Mining Company and Eureka Croesus Mining Company shipping ore and maintaining a payroll of about eighty men, with others at work on nonshipping ground as roads to mines remain open.
George A Ferris senior partner of Ferris and son of Reno was hired by the County Board of Education as architect and consulting engineer for the new County High School. The firm, known across Nevada and in Washington California and Canada, has designed and overseen many school buildings including Reno and Carson City campuses. Ferris is drafting preliminary plans for the proposed structure.
Official returns from Hureka County show Reynolds 330 to Maestrett 180. Lander County reports Maestrett 448 and Reynolds 307, giving Reynolds a total of 637 to Maestrett 28 and electing Reynolds by nine votes per the Battle Mountain Scout.
The Catholic Church in Eureke will hold a mass next Sunday at 9 30 a m Communion will be received by members of the Sunday School Rev W F Kennedy directs the service.
A formal 1933 report to the Eureka-Uncle Sam Consolidated Mining Co directors describes the Eureka District Nevada property on Prospect Mountain. It covers six claims and two fractions totaling about 100 acres, main lodes Hamburgh Uncle Sam, ore values around $700,000, and extensive development including the Hamburgh shaft to 860 feet, levels at 250 450 600 and 850 feet, plus a 1600 foot tunnel from Uncle Sam to Friday shaft. It notes camp facilities, equipment, power, a 36 H.P compressor, and ore shoots averaging high values with early shipments to Salt Lake smelter.
The Nevada Highway News reports progress on the King & Malone contract near Dunphy and grading west of the railroad. Gravel surfacing will begin soon and work will continue through winter 1933. Two bids opened November 20 cover the Burke-Hay Ranch on Lincoln Highway and a 10 mile Plockes to Stone House project on Route 7 in Lincoln County Proche Bly Road.
Chris Johnson resigns from Loth-Davis Company December 20 to join Reno Mercantile Company owned by Chas Eaton, veteran Reno hardware firm. He sells his Uniверsity Street home to W. B. Johnson, deputy internal revenue collector. Johnson, longtime Tonopah dealer since 1904, married Ina Knight in Portland ten years ago. He is a noted hardware authority with extensive trade ties and is son and brother of local officials.
Miss Belle Duncan aged 56 a teacher at the local school died after a short illness at the Gendron ranch last Saturday. She had arrived two weeks ago from Berkeley California and will be shipped to relatives in Los Angeles. Humphrey Kearns undertaker at Austin arrived with the body yesterday.
L. J. Rosenshine reports ore assayed over 43 dollars per ton and high recovery from sulphidizing flotation with tynadding. A new mill, power house, and hoisting plant will be built near the Hamburg shaft next spring. Under current conditions, ores above eight dollars per ton are profitable. The Hamburg mine above the 450 level holds about 60,000 tons of milling ore, with an estimated 60,000 to 100,000 tons more in virgin shoots and old workings below 450. Only ore shipped to the Salt Lake smelter is being sent. the company plans to reserve ore for its own mill. The next six months should develop ore so the property could be valued between two million and three million dollars.
President Torpey of the Eureka-Uncle Sam Mining Co arrived from Salt Lake City for a mines inspection. The six week progress includes opening virgin ore shoots on 350 450 550 levels with high grade milling ore. The Friday shoot on 300 level yields $45 per ton from 100 tons shipped. plans call for development to 50 depth, 200 360 tons monthly milling next spring, with surface work completed and major New York Boston investors negotiating for a large stake.
Clarence Johnson, superintendent for Eureka Secret Canyon Mines, reports that on Tuesday workers intersected the bottom of the Repetto veins on the 200 foot level of the Page shaft in the southeast drift. All the wings were filled, causing debris to fall and making it necessary to delay assessing ore size for one or two days.
Edgar Eather, attorney elect of Barska County, arrived Saturday from Eureka. He represents plaintiff Wm. Laird in the six year old litigation against Newark Mining and Milling Company. He expects to submit the case before Judge McFadden once recovered from illness.
The 1920 federal census shows 53 percent of Nevada’s illiterates aged ten and over were Indians. Of 3,802 illiterates, 2,040 were Indians, a factor in Nevada’s higher illiteracy rate compared with neighboring states. The Elko Free Press reports surveys for the Nevada Central railroad from Wells to Contact completed, with Oklahoma capitalists financing the railroad cutoff to link Nevada with Idaho.
Eureka villagers report visits and travel from Burnka to Mina Nevada with Uncle Sam Mining Co offices moving to the mines. Notables include Mrs L Coveriale Dan Kelly J Fenson Smith and others amid social plans like the Nob Fire Company masquerade and Sagebrush Club dance. Pneumonia patient Willis Hooper shows improvement. A serious saw accident injures Baptista Minoletti. Taxpayers warned of December 4 delinquency deadline.
