Allied forces face deadly defenses at the Dardanelles as General Ian Hamilton reports Turkish wire entanglements sea and land mines and hidden machine guns. The Allies push forward through a grim battle line toward Constantinople amid heavy casualties and ferocious resistance.
Lieutenant R A J Warneford of the British marine earned the Victoria Cross and the Legion of Honor after dropping a bomb on a Zeppelin over Belgium. He perished days later testing an aircraft at the aviation grounds in France. American writer Henry Beach Needham accompanied him. Warneford, born in India in 1892, had served on British-Indian ships before joining the air corps.
The Praemysl fortress in Galicia endured three sieges during the war. Russians attacked in September and October 1914, backed by heavy artillery, but Austrian reinforcements and supplies helped hold. After a prolonged struggle, Przemysl surrendered March 22, 1915, then Austro-German forces later besieged the fortress again, capturing it within twenty days as part of a major western Galicia offensive.

Wm H Smith of Newark Valley White Pine County Nevada announces he has placed out salt and saltpetre for his stock on the east side of the Diamond range from the summit between Albert Man s and his range to Fairy Dell north. The area includes 11 canyons and 12 ridges with south and north lines marked by stakes and flags to within 200 yards of Diamond Mountain top.
Davy Morris advertises a 90 day notice of assessment work on Gordon No 1 and Gordon No 2 mining claims in Eureka Nevada. He states labor and improvements totaling 200 dollars were expended for 1913 1914, owner share 100 dollars, failure to pay within 90 days may transfer ownership.
