A family with a 14 year old boy and 12 year old girl welcome a new baby. The father assigns the boy to telegraph news to his sister, noting the telegrams cost, and the boy replies with a cheeky wire: I win, it a boy. The tale ends with the sister receiving the message.
Nevada farmers in Carson valley report the appearance of Canadian thistle, the arch enemy of alfalfa. Previously only tickle grass and foxtail troubled fields. A concerted effort will be made to eradicate the weed as once established it is very hard to remove.
An eastern exchange recommends boring a quarter inch hole into the heart of an infected fruit tree and filling the cavity with dry sulphur then plugging it. The method is claimed to cure blight and strengthen the tree as the sulphur penetrates the tree. Legal blanks for sale at the Senate office.
Telegraph rates from Eureka to Palisade and other points are listed with day and night options. The 10 word day rate is 85 cents, 50 word day letter 88 cents, and 50 word night letter 25 cents, added to Western Union base rates.
Reduced rates on empty packages returning Eureka to Palisade in Supplement No. 1 to local freight tariff No. 10 effective August 12 1915 at 85 cents per 100 pounds.
