San Francisco April 22. J Dalzell Brown, director, says George J Gould authorizes him to tell Californians that Gould and his overland system back the Western Pacific and will build it promptly to gain a California Pacific terminus at San Francisco. E T Jeffery will be Western Pacific president. Walter J Bartnett becomes vice president and chief counsel. Eight directors including three Eastern men attend upcoming board meeting. Road route from Salt Lake City to Oakland outlined with many California franchises secured. Plan includes a spur to Reno and claims savings in snow sheds grades and curves.

Freight that pays its own way chickens to California

A Kansas paper reports freight for a carload of chickens to California pays its own transit costs. Each day eggs are gathered, and after eight days about 100 crates filled at 15 cents a dozen yield $450, covering charges. The car travels with cases for daily egg supply and complete calculations for upkeep. Also, Butte Miner notes Thomas Cruse sells a 400,000 pound wool clip at 20 cents per pound to Jeremiah Williams & Co. of Boston, totaling about $40,000.

Jeffery Says Western Pacific Financed for Coast Road

A Denver telegram quotes E T Jeffery in New York confirming Western Pacific financing from Salt Lake City to the coast. He reports closing with Blair & Co Solomon & Co and Read & Co for fifty million dollars in bonds and that the contract was signed on behalf of the company to ensure rapid construction of the line.

Private car lines skirt tax and reporting laws in Kansas

Representatives from Swift Armour and Cold Packing along with McDowell Stock Car Company told the State Board of Railroad Assessors they cannot complete annual private car line reports because records are not kept in a way that makes data easy to extract. The board set a May 10 deadline, though the law requires March reports. The Sacramento Bee mocks the excuse about refrigeration and notes Nevada private car lines avoid returns and taxes. Also, Tonopah Goldfield ore shipments for the week ending April 21 totaled 1861 tons, with 63 from Goldfield.
