Federal Provident and Accident Association Aids Idaho Miners

The Mining Reporter notes the second annual statement of the Federal Provident and Accident Association run by the Federal Mining and Smelting Company in the Ooeur D'Alune district Idaho. Workers pay one dollar weekly with company matching. 1908 miner contributions totaled 1126 and company contributions 8603.50. Disbursements reached 4701.15 with unpaid claims of 5037.00 carried forward. Benefits include 1500 death by accident 760 partial disability 750 loss of limb or eye. Board of six trustees splits seats evenly between workers and company. Over 1000 miners are employed in the mines.

Love Triangle Ends In Wedding And Suicide Attempt

Ira Gordon a Southern Pacific switchman attempted suicide at Sparks by taking strychnine after learning Miss Edna Ford would marry J Vassar, an engineer on the same road. Gordon survived with medical aid. Edna Ford married Vassar and they left for a honeymoon to Los Angeles and nearby coast cities.

Woman Narrowly Escapes Falling Into Shaft

Mrs. Clayton Belknap nearly fell into the Best and Belcher shaft at the head of Taylor Street while gathering snow for ice cream on Monday. She dropped about 20 feet onto an old platform and stayed still to avoid a collapse as neighbors lowered a ladder and rope. Dan Tierney descended to rescue her and she was brought safely to the surface.

Destructive Reno Fire Destroys Olympic Skating Pavilion

A Saturday night blaze in Reno starting at the Van Buren stable engulfed the rink and laundry, threatening the business district. In five minutes the Olympic skating pavilion burned, two horses died, and windows shattered. Loss estimated at $15,000 with $12,000 insured. rink recently completed at $16,000.

Sentenced to Serve Two Years for Embezzlement

H. P. Brown pleaded guilty to embezzling funds from the Brougher Mills Company of Carson and was sentenced by Judge Langan to two years in the State Prison. Brown was dejected and led from the courtroom sobbing.

Fatal shooting at Derby over fishing rights dispute

George Murphy a government engineer on the Trackoo Carson project in Derby Washoe County was shot April 18 by Nelson Shaffer of Reno after Murphy drove a crowd from the dam for a second time. The bullet entered above the left eye as Shaffer fled ten feet away. Shaffer surrendered to deputies and is jailed in Reno. The incident followed a dispute over fishing rights at the Derby dam with local youths present.
