Longest Power Line Demonstrates West’s Transmission Reach
The Southern Sierra Power Company in Riverside California has operated a 517 mile high tension line from its California plant to Yuma Arizona. The line carries 87,000 volt supply 239 miles to San Bernardino then 55,000 volts onward to the remainder. A burnt transformer in San Bernardino did not halt service as the current continued the full distance at 50,000 volts during repairs. The Montana Power Company also shows electric traction can move heavy freight and passengers, proving that distance is no barrier to transmission.
