Schools to Open September 24 in Eugene Area

Officials plan delaying the Eugene school opening from September 1 to September 24 to allow pupils to help in hop fields and ease hop growers’ needs. The change hinges on the county teachers institute schedule. County Superintendent Dillard secured favorable replies from instructors and awaits school board action Thursday to finalize the plan.

Season for killing ducks is open near Elmira

The duck killing season opened yesterday with few birds in the area. George H Smith Drew Griffin and Mick Griggs visited the Eugene Gun Club game preserve near Elmira hoping for better prospects but managed only one duck. Pigs were plentiful feeding on acorns and haws.

Disgraced Steel Chief William Corey Pays Wife 3 Million

William E. Corey, president of United States Steel, is reported to have given his estranged wife three million dollars in securities as alimony and for desertion rather than alleged intimate liaisons. Mrs Corey gains custody of their seventeen year old son Allan. A Corey sister criticized New York elites as unsuited to uplift a youth, labeling wealthy New York men as derelict influences. Bridge Crew Expected On Every Train

Engineer S. Freeland in charge of the Southern Pacific bridge at Springfield says a crew will erect the steel portion on every train. The work will take a few days and then the branch line will be ready for trains. Bridges across the mill race in Springfield are completed with rails laid and connections to the main lines at Springfield and Springfield Junction.

Donkey Engine Buried to Save Logging Gear

Corvallis native Hills, an O C graduate from the class of 1905, faced a February fire near Springfield in Lane County that threatened his logging outfit on Fall Creek. With no exit for the heavy machinery, he buried the donkey engine to spare the rest of the gear, while flames swept on.

Attorney S P Ness reports Samuel Manerud of this city is progressing well on his O R N contract near Bridal Veil and expects two months more employment. Hoo Hoo Initiation Shines At A O U W Hall

The Hoo Hoo concatenation in A. O. U. W. hall Saturday night was one of the most successful ever held by the lambermans order. A large class of candidates was initiated and a toastmaster led the event. Names of the initiates include Harvey E. Lounsbury, McGarvey Cline, John Brookmeyer, Thomas Keim Jr., Willis Brown, Dwight Hopkins, John Hammitt, Arthur McCarty, Thos. Yerger, Frank Miller, Lee Travis, Frank Osburn, Fred Walters, Henry Fisher, Frank Anderson, Ernest Hyland, Robert Shaw, Samuel Pease, and others. The work was demonstrated by Lounsberry, Choe, Hyland, and McCarty among others. Officers included W. B. MacKay and Geo. A. Kelly with senior and junior Hoo Hoo leaders.
