County School Superintendent Dillard Wins Co 6 Medal

County School Superintendent W Dillard tops the company shooting contest at the annual camp shoot securing the gold medal with a score of 7 out of 100. Kerr takes silver in the same class for the best shot by a member who had not previously qualified. Other scores listed include Lt. Hunter and Lt. Willoughby among participants.

Mrs W B Yates lost her barn to fire last Monday with no origin clue. Mrs W Waddle and daughter left for Halsey Sunday. L Bond adds a porch to his residence. Mr and Mrs Milos Taylor of Eppingfield visited Irving. Jugene Wm Montgomery planned a short visit with relatives. Mrs Thos Gray traveled to Salem for a few days with friends. Freight Car Shortage Deepens Across California

A Southern Pacific employee warns the freight car shortage will worsen in two weeks. About 500 lumber cars are stuck in California bound for San Francisco, with eight miles of sidings loaded with lumber. The bottleneck harms shippers and SP alike as Mare Island and Southern California work stall for lack of cars, piling, and timbers. Car factories are backlogged, and Eastern railroads can’t supply replacements. San Francisco’s disaster is blamed for much of this year’s problem.

Wm Mathews who was captured in Eugene by Sheriff Fisk Deputy Pugh and Hamlin and Spokane officers decided to return to Spokane without requisition papers. He is charged with stealing five standard bred running horses valued over 2700. The horses have been recovered.

Allen Fruit Co completes pruning and drying ops for season

The Allen Fruit Co has finished drying prunes for the season the last batch going into the dryer Saturday. Manager W G Allen says output is much higher than in years past though rain reduced some of the crop. The new evaporator performed well a carload of dried prunes ships to Chicago and future shipments will go out every four days. Tomatoes and apples are also being processed and packed for shipment with each box labeled as produced by the Allen company in Eugene.

Murder of Y M C A secretary in Spokane

Reno Hutchinson, recently appointed general secretary of the Y M C A, was shot at 7 55 pm near Seventh avenue and Howard street in Spokane. He died about ten minutes later after collapsing in a Postmaster Hartson’s yard. Police doubt the highwayman theory, suggesting an assassination, and note the crime occurred under electric streetlamp glare. Hutchinson, a former University of Chicago football player, was widely regarded in the organization.
