Daily Guard reports M. F. S. Abshire selling the Hazelwood to M. J. Hubble a retired drayman. Hubble will take charge at 9 am tomorrow and plans changes to establish the Hazelwood as the valley’s best bakery and restaurant. The retiring operator leaves with commendable service and hints at a brief hiatus from business.
The Salem and Eugene teams face rivals in Eugene next Saturday and Sunday. Roseburg travels to Albany to meet them on the same dates, bringing a weekend slate of intercity matches.

Springfield May 10 The S P Company surveyors have set up near the post office to map a permanent river crossing and connecting line between Henderson and Springfield They report right of way secured with few disputes and anticipate a Eugene rail expansion bringing in crews, shops, roundhouses and a large monthly payroll boosting local commerce with yard and track improvements underway after the presidential party passes.
Vigilant citizens and doubled police patrols chased away burglars who operated in Eugene last week. Authorities report 16 suspicious people detained and searched with only one fined. the gang was driven to the city limits and given a farewell as officers warned residents to remain vigilant for several nights.

The Modern Woodmen of America lodge in Crow will host a Woodmen picnic on the third Saturday of June the 2th. Sack races footraces games amusements basket dinner and other activities are planned. Everyone is invited.

The Portland Daily Journal celebrated installation of a new $25,000 press that can print two colors and produce up to 4,000 papers per hour. Since its 1902 start the paper has grown amid rival Oregonian and Telegram, expanding staff and subscribers.
Sheriff Fisk has issued a deed to A J Wilhelm for 320 acres in Long Tom precinct from a sheriff certificate of sale that had languished for years. The certificate shows sale by J R Campbell on Dec 21 1885 in favor of A Wilhelm against Ben and Jesse Cox for 2420 dollars. sale confirmed April 19 1886 and Wilhelm entitled to deed August 19 1886, nearly seventeen years overdue.
Ben L. Holmes of Benton county near Albany was injured when a hollow ash tree two feet in diameter fell during bee tree cutting on the Watson farm. The split trunk pinned him to the ground causing a mashed left lung and multiple internal injuries. His condition is described as probably fatal.
Baker City Oregon reports May L and Geo W Hayes former Barns Land Office official and Mrs E Horton wed in Weiser Idaho recently. Horton once served a penitentiary term for adultery with Hayes and was pardoned by Governor Geer. Hayes was removed from office for the same misconduct.
Daily Guard reports progress on M S Barker’s new sawmill near the river bridge in Eugene. Six workers lay the foundation while machinery arrives from Gross Iron Works. The mill aims for 10 000 to 15 000 feet per day with potential to increase, targeting early July operation as delays ease with the river’s current alignment.
A large eastern sawmill firm plans to locate at Natron on the site abandoned by the Wagnon mill. The new mill is to have 40,000 feet capacity and is expected to be in operation this fall.
Mr Brano representing the Maza man has arranged a ten day voyage to the Three Sisters in Eugene. Transportation costs 1 per day and board 1.50 daily totaling 25 for ten days. A wheel party saves 1 per day reducing expenses to 15 for the round trip. They plan to leave July 5th Thursday morning.
Thomas Barbie a famed Lane County pioneer living on a Zion area farm in Lost Valley lies gravely ill. At about 70, his health deteriorated through winter and spring, with doctors summoned after a Pleasant Hill message. Mr Harbre and his daughter Mrs George Handeaker headed to the bedside.
A. F. E. Reames spoke to a packed armory audience on May 18 in Oregon City, with strong applause and support evident as attendees remained through his entire address. The crowd, including many representative men, endorsed his policies over opponent Binger Liermann, and post meeting talk centered on anticipated votes for Reames.
An effective combination forms in Eugene with Hon. L. T. Harris and A. C. Woodcock teaming in law. Harris moved his office to 628 Willamette Street, ready for occupancy, while Woodcock’s office is refitted. The two will operate as Woodcock Harris in the Fourth Judicial District.
Sheriff Fisk provides figures on tax collections including original rolls 195 and 28.76 taxes collected 168 166.07 rebates 4 872.55 and amount yet on rolls 22 78 24 guidance that most will be paid under the second half provision in October.
In Woodburn on May 19 Mr and Mrs Jas Casey marked their golden wedding anniversary They wed at Oregon City on May 19 1853 Casey a Marion County farmer and former partner of Hon D P Thompson in Oregon City blacksmithing is 77 and his wife 74 They enjoy good health and have 13 children alive 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren
George Vernon Schaffer pleaded guilty to larceny before Judge Hamilton in the circuit court. He received a one year penitentiary sentence after admitting to robbing his roommate James Welch in a Roseburg lodging house last April. He was captured the following day in Eugene and brought back for trial.
Portland, May 20. A 19 year old youth caused the separation of Mrs. Livorge Hixson of Roseburg and her husband. The woman sits in the city jail today while Edward Wilson is under arrest. She fled from Portland last fall for Wilson and vows to protect him with a revolver if needed.
At a Eugene Baseball Company meeting last evening Rock Starr was named captain replacing Hartley who resigned. Hartley and Lorimer withdrew from the team and Buck leads the offense as Eugene plans to win a two game spread against Salem with lineup changes to fill vacancies.
Junction City Oregon held a special election permitting bonds to fund repairs and a two story addition to the public school buildings. The measure contemplates inside refurnishing and fall work as valuations rise due to a Danish colony location attracting rents and housing demand.
Col. Geo. O. Yoran issued orders for Companies A and C and the Fourth Regiment band to parade with the G. A. R. on Decoration Day in May. The move follows an invitation from the GO. A. R. to participate.
