Government opens massive land suit against Oregon railroad
Portland, June 3 The United States filed a sweeping suit against the Oregon California Railroad Company seeking to set aside 1866 and 1870 land grants covering about 3.5 million acres in Oregon and reclaim 2 million acres sold under alleged grant violations. The government argues lands not sold to actual settlers at specified prices were forfeited. the railroad contends patents already issued make the lands theirs. The case, long in preparation, stems from Oregon’s 1907 memorial to the president and congressional action in 1908 1909, with Townsend as special prosecutor and extensive briefing now before the court.
