New York on May 31 quoted Captain Osburn saying Cook did not intend to return with records this winter and that another man would. London papers claimed Scotland had no trace of Cook though wire reports said he planned to fly to Etah and bring back proof of the North Pole discovery.

A June 1 report from Hannibal Missouri notes a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting twenty five railroads from advancing freight rates. St Louis dispatch reports a locomotive exploded near Collinsville Junction on the St Louis Troy and Eastern tracks today killing three aboard. The blast occurred during routine operations and authorities began investigations into the cause of the disaster.

The Gilliam county High School principal H U McCann, facing dismissal over alleged misconduct with female students, shot himself yesterday afternoon. His body was found beside a deserted cabin five miles northwest of Condon. An empty liquor view lay nearby. The board had summoned him to answer charges after two 16 year old girls reported improper conduct. A strawberry plant near Hillsboro was noted to bear 310 berries.
Hon B F Dorris told the history of the University of Oregon to a gathered alumni and students in Villard hall, marking an unusually silent, intensely engaged audience. At Devil's Slide near Ogden Utah a quarry blast at Union Portland Cement works killed twenty five workers. Most victims were Japanese and Greeks. A special relief train with doctors and nurses was dispatched as rescue efforts continued. Debris and severed remains were scattered across the hillside and distant areas.
Mrs. Mary Nixon who runs a large farm near Harrisburg Oregon sustained a severe scalp injury when a runaway team overturned her buggy near a bridge while she and her five children were driving home Sun night. She was unconscious for a period but the others escaped injury. This is her second runaway incident in a month.
