Cottage Grove Sawmills Ramp Up Amid Timber Reserve Plans
Cottage Grove area mills with a 2446 million feet capacity report depleted stocks but anticipate revival after harvest. About 156 million feet expected for the year with two new 30 000 foot daily capacity mills and a 100 000 capacity unit planned in the forest reserve. A three mile railroad into the reserve and government timber sale to Fir Lumber drive a multi‑mill effort including Eugene contractors to handle logs, while cedar poles and shingle production expand.

Frederick N. Dickson, master in chancery, finds railroads win a major victory in a 1908 lumber rate suit against the Interstate Commerce Commission. He upholds coast to Pembina line rates but declares coast to east of Pembina unreasonably low and recommends nullifying the ICC order on these lumber rates. Railroads sought 50 and 60 cent rates to St Paul and Chicago. ICC cut to 45 and 55 cents.
