Inspector Russell reported receiving a partial, somewhat verified account about the Perlman matter. The informant was Perlman, not Perlmutter, and the officer involved was reportedly intoxicated outside the car. Perlman visited with a detective and said a waiter warned the officer about potential trouble if superiors learned of drinking.
Portland August reports confirm plans to extend the Oregon Trunk Line through the Cascade mountains to Medford in the Rogue River valley. President John F. Stevens says Pacific & Eastern will be absorbed, with construction from Celilo to Bend and a possible link to Banks via Oregon Electric lines. Track work advances on the Pacific & Eastern and United Railways routes, with new tunnels, freight facilities, and electric cars planned to boost freight and passenger service.
In Portland the blaze started by a celluloid device worn to suspend lace collars cost $99,000 and gutted a laundry building trapping about 200 workers. Firemen forced evacuations as flames engulfed the basement superheated room and upper floors filled with smoke. The group seeks spiritual intellectual social and physical welfare with power to own mortgage real estate and erect operate suitable buildings for reading rooms and related activities.
Secretary of the Interior Richard A. Ballinger plans a postponed Portland visit on Thursday and Friday with Mrs Ballinger E C Finney and H F McCabe as escort. London reports that the Crippen inquest into the alleged death of Belle Elmore resumes tomorrow. Dr. Pepper will testify after an autopsy failed to determine the victim’s sex and investigators face questions over the body found at Crippen’s home. Trial prospects hinge on proving Belle Elmore’s death amid Crippen’s flight and conflicting statements.
London reports Dr. H. H. Crippen denies confessing to Inspector Dew or any other officer. Attorney Newton, Crippen counsel in Quebec, says Crippen will not speak until he sees his lawyer and believes authorities know no more about the alleged crime than before Crippen’s arrest.
G E Kennedy of the Vella Fargo Express company and his machinist W H Watson traveled by automobile from El Centro in the Imperial valley to Portland. Their journey featured six broken springs numerous blowouts and punctures. They halted at Yreka where a burned bridge forced river fording and an on water magneto short caused by splashing. A submerged rock later lifted the differential leaving the car immobilized until a farmer pulled them free.
At Sulphur Oklahoma six hundred Indians signed McMurray land contracts using almost an entire bottle of ink. They were told McMurray would profit 2 to 3 million in fees while lands valued at 30 to 40 million would be quickly realized. James H Godfrey testified before a congressional committee that inducements swayed signatures claiming government action was pending. Former US attorney Latham testified a McMurray partner offered him part of a 10 thousand dollar payment during contract talks.

Gans began boxing in 1894 and won the lightweight title from Frank Erns in 1902, losing it to Battling Nelson in 1908 after 17 rounds.
Bellingham, Wash. Aug. 9. The steamer Chippewa with 300 excursionists from Bellingham for Victoria is ashore at Castle Island. Passengers have been taken off and are camping on the beach. Tugs head to assist and determine damage to the vessel.
County court members inspected a Jasper area slide affecting the railroad right of way and wagon road above. Commissioner Price said the new road, built by the railroad, will not be accepted until it matches the old road in quality.
E R Ewbank wife and son Leland from Medford plan to locate in Eugene after a Deschutes Valley trip. They toured Crater Lake and will consider a Park street home last used by Kappa Sigma. Leland Ewbank would enroll in the local high school. Accompanied by L B Brown family from Medford.
