White Plains July 14 The Thaw hearing resumed with several witnesses describing Thaw’s behavior during his stay in Poughkeepsie jail. Mrs Thaw is to be recalled for further testimony as doctors prepare a physical examination of Thaw, with adjournment anticipated until Monday.
Berlin July 14 Dr Von Beth ellwee was today appointed chancellor of the empire in succession to Prince Von Bulow. The engineer of the proposed Coos fay and Inland Empire railroad declares to the Roseburg News there is not a single doubt that the road will be built and that it will be soon.
The grand lodge event drew about 25 000 attendees at Long Beach where a unique entertainment included a barbecue. In Los Angeles, the grand lodge elected officers led by Exalted Ruler James A Sammie of Lamars Iowa and other officials from Scranton Pa Dubuque Iowa Denver and Bemidji Minnesota. Balloting for exalted grand ruler was close with Sammie at 92 votes and Hermann at 529 with the final count still in doubt.

Denver July 14 A Chinese newspaper with unofficial government sanction and carrying the New York consul’s report claims Leon Ling concealed a body and attempted to hide his whereabouts after Bisse Segel killed herself in Ling’s room. The report says Ling was absent when found. Chung jin advised secrecy to avoid police disbelief and lynching. Chinese authorities are said to back Masons in shielding Ling.

The Nobel prize for medicine was shared last year by Professor Elie Metchnikoff of Paris and Professor Paul Ehrlich of Berlin. Metchnikoff is renowned globally for research into prolonging human life.
A fiery pledge denounces the University of Chicago, predicting widespread student flight and eventual closure. The speaker condemns atheism and immorality, charging the institution abandoned Baptist origins and misused Baptist funds after promising truth.

Pittsburg July 14 In an official communication Thos L Lewis national president of the United Mine Workers of America forbids the strike of 18000 men of the Pittsburg Coal Company which has been called to take place tomorrow.
In Pittsburg at the Pressed Steel Car plant in McKees Rocks a 1200 strong steel workers strike led to clashes with police. Shots were fired and several injured though not seriously. Afternoon crowds grew to thousands and deputies were requested as a broader strike spread to about five thousand workers with more trouble anticipated.
Chicago on July 13 marked the closing hours of the state's evidence in the case against Ella Gingles the young Irish lace maker whose story of torture at the Wellington Hotel February 17 was being impeached by wrangling lawyers and further testimony.
William Sulzer, a Manhattan East Side congressman, is repeatedly named as a potential Democratic candidate for mayor. Benjamin Bronson of the Wellington hotel testified about finding Miss Gingles and described her tied position. Dr. W O Krohn, a nervous and mental disease specialist, testified on her reactions to touch during his examination.
New York on July 13 reports Harriman ill prompted Wall Street to push down stock prices. Union Pacific and Southern Pacific led declines while the overall market slipped about a point with Southern Pacific dropping 1 1/4 points and Union Pacific about 7 8.
