Jan 20 Chicago reports a fire and explosion at an underwater intake crib in Lake Michigan. Geo W Jackson says 23 men died, 40 injured, as workers under air pressure sheltered in the tunnel beneath the crib. Rescue crews recovered twenty bodies. more may lie at the shaft bottom.
Manila January 20 Pope Isto leader of a Ladrones band was reprieved by Governor-General Smith after being sentenced to hang next Friday for murder and Ladronism. R Hardisty of Harrisburg was in the city today on business.
Washington report notes Rep Denby proposes a bill to forbid opium imports except for medicine. Doctors warn use is rising nationwide and penalties would aid enforcement. In a separate item Senator Frazier, from Tennessee, spoke on Brownsville, opposing re enlistment bills for Twenty fifth regiment deserters.
Olympia Washington January 20 Wesley Jones was declared elected to succeed Senator Ankeny after a joint assembly canvassed the vote for senator today.
In Salem Oregon today Senate President Bowerman declared Governor George E Chamberlain elected United States senator for a six year term beginning March 4. Chamberlain pledged independence from pledges to any man or party and promised to work for direct senatorial elections tariff revision and resource conservation. Legislative actions included a bill to create five normal school districts and salary increases for Lane County deputy district attorney. A bill by Bean and Brooke targets pre election pledges conflicting with the constitution and oath of office. A budget printing requirement was proposed before appropriations bills are considered.
Washington January 20 Uncle Sam's purse grew by nearly one million dollars from timber cut on national forests in 1908. Twenty five percent of this amount was returned to the state treasury where the forests lie, under the law that taxes are replaced.
Eugene residents led by prominent citizens secured a county franchise to build a rail line from Eugene to Florence. Three route options were considered Elmira Irving Franklin Lake Creek, with the best path to be chosen after survey. The track will occupy up to 15 feet of county roads with 40 feet minimum road width and poles placed outside the track.
Salem records indicate a bill introduced in the legislature to sterilize criminally insane individuals, supported by Dr Owens Adair and physicians, expected to provoke debate.
