Sixty Philadelphia nurses arrived by special car and about one hundred physicians are in Butler as the typhoid epidemic linked to Beaver river water expands. Officials warn at least three thousand cases may develop before the outbreak ends.
The Ottawa University, a Roman Catholic institution, burned completely this morning in Ottawa Ontario. The loss is about a quarter million dollars. Several students escaped by jumping from high windows without injuries. Father Beyon, fatally injured, jumped from the fifth story and fell on a veranda. Father Fulham survived the fall from the fourth story but was seriously hurt. An elderly woman servant was badly hurt leaping from the fifth floor and another domestic Miss Dupuis was badly burned.
London December 1 bells chimed for Queen Alexandra as she entered her sixtieth year. The Sandringham estate honored the day with a holiday for tenantry and decorations. A large house party including royal family and intimate friends helped celebrate. Telegrams of congratulations arrived from Denmark and other European relatives. Her majesty received many valuable gifts.
In Chilesburg Kentucky on December 2 Henry Gray and Louis Skaggs dueled in the morning trampling into the street. Gray was instantly killed and Skaggs mortally wounded before aid arrived.
In New York on December 2, Daniel Meyers former president of the Manhattan Fire Insurance Company faced a trial before Recorder Goff for misappropriating $40,000 of company funds.
Kinmundy Illinois reports a major blaze in the business district during the afternoon of December 2. The fire caused losses exceeding 1000000 dollars as the town of about 2000 residents reels from the sweeping fire. Firefighters struggle to control the rapid spread through Main Street storefronts.
