Busy scene at Allen cannery in Bartlett pear rush
A Guard reporter visited the Allen cannery this morning where Bartlett pears are just starting to be canned. Manager W G Allen trains about 75 women and girls in peeling and cutting the pears while noting the crop is immense and he expects to pack many more cases than in years past. About a dozen men are employed around the facility.

Threshing Machine Destroyed By Fire Near EuGene
Gravelle and Maxwell's threshing machine, working on Gray Bros farm a few miles below EuGene along the river road, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon between four and five o'clock due to a hot box. The blaze spread to straw stocks, and the fire was checked from spreading to the wrair. In Spokane the seventeenth year old Sidney Sloane murdered his father James F. Sloane with an axe. the body was found in an alley after being wheeled in a wheelbarrow. The teen confessed to robbing his wealthy retired merchant father, while his mother was absent.
