Damaging Testimony Against Mays in Land Fraud Trial
In Portland on August 2 in the federal land fraud case against Franklin Pierce Mays, A G King former Malheur county clerk testified he circulated petitions to create the Blue Mountain reserve and was promised land he never received. He said Mays paid Forest Service inspection bills. W D Penton led the defense’s opening, denying a government conspiracy and portraying the case as a straw man argument about a purported plot. The audience and jury observed the defense’s strong showing as proceedings closed with confidence in Hinger Hermann.
