Willamette Valley Co. files bond for electric railway

Fall A Welch, manager, arrived from Portland to file the company acceptance of the city council granted electric railway franchise and a bond of 80 to begin work within six months. Work on water, gas, and reservoirs proceeds. trolley line start expected in 60 to 70 days, with full line operation by next summer between Salem and Chemawa and cars running early September.

Watson found guilty of perjury in homestead case

Charles A. Watson was convicted after a sixteen hour jury verdict in federal court on perjury connected to final proof on a homestead. The jury urged mercy. maximum penalty five years in prison and a fine. The case ties to the Butte Creek Company and its president H. H. Hendricks, already convicted of subornation of perjury.

Lane county hop crop yield seen shorter than expected

Reliable sources indicate Lane county hops will be smaller this year, with expert inside the industry noting yards examined show yields not up to last year. Special to Daily Guard Cottage Grove August 1 two boys escapees from Washington state reform school shot dead an old man William Powell one mile south of the city as he cooked a meal on a railway bridge Powell a 70 year old umbrella mender from England fought in the Civil War and died within hours after the shooting Two youths aged 15 and 14 were captured later that night and held for murder in the first degree They were brought to Cottage Grove by Sheriff Fred Fisk and Deputy D A J M Williams and jailed without bail Pending circuit court in November.
