Whiskey cause of Siletz Indian killing
Newport, Oregon reports startling evidence of a legal sale of bad whiskey to Siletz Indians by white men. Government investigator Dr. Frachtenberg ties the triple tragedy at Siletz Agency to bootleggers supplying liquor to Indians in violation of federal law. Gus Olson of Toledo is named as a key seller, with multiple testimonies alleging he sold whiskey to John Spencer and others the night before the killings. Indian Agent Egbert pledges circuit court action to prosecute involved saloonmen and dealers to deter further intoxication on the reservation.
