American officer killed by French ammunition mishap

John B. K. Smith, a farmer from Selo, died yesterday after a mountain trip during which he drank an enormous quantity of water. He became ill before reaching home and never recovered. He leaves a widow and three children.

Fire roars through Oregon State Insane Asylum wings

Salem July 27 The north wing of the State Insane Asylum four stories high and basement burned quickly due to oil on floors. Fire broke out at 10 30 and after an hour and a half was controlled. Two hundred inmates saved by drill. no deaths or injuries reported. Fire blamed on crossing electric wires. 1420 patients and 178 employees affected.
