The Portland Consolidated properties in Encampment near the Colorado line cover 441 square miles on the continental divide. The Portland group totals about 208% acres with multiple shafts and up to 3,500 feet of vein runs. Ore grades include copper and gold values with bulk tonnage estimates of about 450,000 tons valuing around 5.68 million dollars, based on copper at 60 pounds per ton and 40 cents gold. Joe Smith, a noted Encampment prospector, calls the consolidation the district’s best news in years, predicting immediate ore extraction once work begins.
