A severe Midwest blizzard hits the Dakotas with fierce winds and heavy losses. Emmons and Stark counties report major stock and livestock losses while a farm hand dies in Grand Forks. Dispatches from Colorado to Michigan confirm widespread damage and shifting precipitation.
A severe snow and wind storm hit North Dakota from Friday to Sunday, causing widespread stock losses and significant hardship. Reports cite heavy cattle and sheep deaths, with estimates in the thousands across the region, including Standing Rock and Emmons counties. Local ranchers report frostbitten livestock and crews surveying damage, while individuals recount near misses and odd incidents during the blizzard.
Reports of storm losses vary. one of the saddest events was the death of 12 year old Madaleina Feist of Tirshol. She started from her home to visit her uncle about 150 yards away and disappeared. After the storm she was found dead two miles from home near Ludwig Mattern's house, shawl over her head, hand grasping snow. If she had held out a short time longer she might have been saved.
A group of prisoners sheltered on a snow covered roof ate hay poked through holes as a toboggan slide ferried them to a lower level. Several sat cramped on the snow floor while one slid down to safety as rescuers freed them.
A letter from N H Suverly in Hamren North Dakota on March 1st 1902 offers a so called lifting jack to friend Streeter. It describes three sizes No 1 No 2 and No 3 with lifting powers and prices. The sender claims the jack is a free gift and warns not to stretch the truth.
