London dispatch reports Lord Methuen captured by Boers along with four pieces of artillery. He is severely wounded in the knee. Casualties include three British officers and 38 men killed, 6 officers and 72 men wounded, with over 200 missing. Baggage and ammunition also seized.
Katharina Rieker of a farm south of Linton died after kerosene spilled from a bottle while she poured it on a stove. Dr Hogue said she suffered severe burns across most of her body. her eyes were not blinded. She died within hours. Funeral held Wednesday. Sympathy poured out for her honest hard working parents.
Four year old Ethel Morris daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Morris of Dale Emmons County North Dakota died early Saturday morning from diphtheria. The child’s Dowieite parents delayed medical aid citing religious beliefs. Two sick siblings recovered after treatment by Dr. Shockey. Public anger grows over faith healing and calls for legal consequences against the family.
