Emmons County records discuss forming a uniform textbook system across townships. Poor road conditions hindered immediate consensus, but letters from Winona and Buroak back the plan. A follow up meeting is planned as schools expand, to ease transfers and reduce costs for families.
The Dakota Legislature had approved moving the capital from Bismarck to Pierre, but Governor Pierce vetoed the measure. He argues equity requires compensation to Bismarck supporters and cites legal authorities on the contract. The House then failed to override the veto, 26 to 20, as the bill stalled.
The measure dividing Emmons county provisioned an election in a future month with Williamsport and Winona as polling places. Voters know little about the bill’s exact provisions or method of election. Citizens demand clarity on whether special rules apply or if general law governs.
The House prohibition bill to submit the question to territorial voters failed in the Council. A capital punishment bill was debated in Bismarck last week. The recent session left the people of Dakota weary of capital punishment debates.

A social visit to Mr and Mrs Brook from town ends with a nocturnal return trip to Williamsport after three hours, arriving home around 2:30.
Mr A Croghan entertained many friends at the Williamsport schoolhouse last Thursday evening. Dancing continued until about 1 am followed by a supper, then music again until roughly 3 am. Guests departed content after a pleasant social affair, with a vote of thanks to the host for the entertainment.
Arrangements are being made to hold regular church services at the school house in the Williamsport neighborhood. A gentleman among us has qualifications for conducting union services and people who heard Mr. J. H. Worst’s eloquent sermon at Mr. Roop’s last summer wish to hear him again. If not settled, it should be at once, as all in the Williamsport area desire it.
The partial sun eclipse drew crowds Monday with a noted drop in mercury and a witty mention of beer mugs versus window panes for viewing. An entertainment at Williamsport schoolhouse on Friday evening, March 20 features music and literary exercises to support community social interests.
The legislature adjourned Friday while Williamsport residents plan April 1 returns and rail road prospects in Dakota loom. Local updates note Searles and Dunn & Co. offering sale prices on sewing machines and dry goods, plus a flurry of farm plans and property changes in Emmons County.
