On December 18 in Mitau Courland the defending troops withdrew from country districts to Riga Mitau and Libau to halt insurgent advances. Several detachments were defeated and the Ta kum garrison suffered loss of its commander Lieutenant Colonel Mueller and thirty men. Insurgents set fires and used wire entanglements as soldiers fled. civilians suffered brutal mutilations. The insurgents organize in strong bands and wield military rifles and bayonets.
