United States Senator John H. Mitchell, 70, died at Good Samaritan hospital Portland after severe bleeding following the removal of four teeth at a dental office. Despite surgeons' efforts and strong styptics the hemorrhage could not be controlled, and he succumbed at 11:40 a.m. Doctors had earlier moved him to the hospital as the bleeding worsened. Mitchell's health had been poor for years and his June land fraud conviction had strained his nerves.
