Gov. Briggs designates Friday May 7 1897 as Arbor Day encouraging trustees faculties students teachers pupils and citizens to plant trees shrubs and vines on public buildings highways and around homes to beautify the state and promote tree care and culture for public gain.
Permits to lease hay and grazing lands on Northern Pacific lands in Emmons county will be issued by the undersigned until July 1, 1897. Bids must include money which is returned if not accepted. Send applications and funds to F. W. Witsey Eastern Land Agent St Paul Minn. Castoria ads interspersed in the column.
Robert Dickson of Williamsport North Dakota announces a cattle herd will run the coming season at his Burleigh County farm with spring water good range and a non corral herd. He will be aided by a fine bull and stock.
Permits to cut buy on school and state lands for 1897 will be sold at public auction for cash by the county treasurer at Williamsport Court House on May 1, 1897 starting 10 oclock am. No bid below 2.50 per quarter section. By order of the Board of University and School Lands Geo H Winters Land Commissioner.

The Williamsport jail case against Frank Blackhawk and Alex Coudette moves toward a preliminary examination set for April 13 as Attorney Ed Allen aids the state. A self-inflicted wound by Coudette and a public confession tie Blackhawk to the killings, with Indian witnesses and evidence mounting.
Emmons County ND board met in regular session April 5 7 1897 with commissioners Macdonald Wolf and Baxter present. They designated Emmons County Record for delinquent tax publication and appointed road supervisors and health board members. Multiple bills were approved and various adjournments set through April 9 1887.
